Kannon Shrine at Kiyo Falls, Sakanoshita, Tōkaidō
circa 1833-1834
Hokusai was absolutely obsessed with waterfalls, creating this vertical masterpiece as part of his famous series 'A Tour of the Waterfalls in Various Provinces' around 1833. Notice how the massive cascade of blue water dominates the left side, looking almost like a solid ribbon of ice crashing down the cliff face. Meanwhile, tiny travelers brave a steep, winding path on the right, while others relax at a thatched-roof tea house at the bottom—probably enjoying a well-deserved break after that climb! This print is a brilliant example of ukiyo-e, capturing both the raw power of nature and the quiet moments of daily life in Edo-period Japan.
