Cool Spray at Naptime
1800s
Kawanabe Kyōsai, famously known as the 'Demon of Painting,' captures a hilarious moment of childhood mischief in this sketch titled 'Cool Spray at Naptime.' A man is trying to catch some shut-eye on a traditional wooden pillow, completely unaware that a kneeling boy is spitting a stream of water from a bowl right at him, while another child cheers the prank on with arms raised. The loose, sketchy brushwork and the calligraphy in the corner suggest this is a page from one of his famous sketchbooks, showing his playful side away from serious commissions. It’s a perfect example of his 'giga' (humorous pictures) style.
