Crow on a Bamboo Branch
ca. 1887
Kawanabe Kyōsai, a wild character often nicknamed the 'Demon of Painting,' brings a striking intensity to this ink wash masterpiece. The crow, rendered in bold, heavy strokes of black sumi ink, stares out with a piercing eye. Perched on a sturdy bamboo stalk, the bird looks almost ready to take flight, contrasting sharply with the delicate, sweeping leaves. A flash of gold signature on the lower bamboo adds a touch of elegance to the otherwise monochromatic scene. Kyōsai was famous for his spontaneous style, often painting while drunk, and you can feel that energetic, confident brushwork here.
