Tortue by Kawanabe Kyōsai, 1800s

Kawanabe Kyōsai, often nicknamed the 'Demon of Painting' for his wild lifestyle and incredible speed, captures a tortoise here with just a few masterful strokes of ink. The creature looks almost like it's scuttling right off the page, its shell rendered in wet, gray washes while its claws dig into the paper with sharp, dark lines. This playful sketch is accompanied by his signature cursive calligraphy and a red seal, typical of his album leaves that blended traditional techniques with a quirky, observant humor. He was known to paint while drunk, and this loose, energetic style shows exactly why he was a legend in 19th-century Japan.
