Evening at Minano, Chichibu
1946
Kawase Hasui, a master of the shin-hanga or 'new print' movement, traveled extensively across Japan to capture its quiet beauty, and this 1946 masterpiece is a perfect example of his genius. Created just after the devastation of World War II, this serene river landscape at dusk—with its soft pink sky reflecting off the water and dark, looming mountains—offered a much-needed sense of peace and nostalgia to a recovering nation. Hasui's incredible attention to light and atmosphere makes the scene feel almost photographic, yet the distinct woodblock texture keeps it firmly rooted in traditional Japanese art.
