Kawase Hasui captures the fiery beauty of autumn at Lake Chuzenji with this stunning woodblock print from 1930. Notice how the brilliant red maple tree in the foreground practically bursts off the page, contrasting perfectly with the serene, deep blue of the lake and the looming Mount Nantai in the distance. A tiny sailboat drifts by, emphasizing the massive scale of nature. Hasui was a master of the 'Shin-hanga' (new print) movement, a modernist revival of traditional Japanese woodblock printing that incorporated Western lighting and perspective techniques.
