Zentsuji Temple in Shikoku by Kawase Hasui, 1937

Step into a quiet, rainy afternoon in 1937 Japan with this atmospheric masterpiece by Kawase Hasui. You can almost hear the rain dripping off the curved roof of the temple gate as a lone traveler in a yellow umbrella pauses beneath it. Looming in the misty background is the majestic pagoda of Zentsuji Temple, fading into the grey sky like a ghost. Hasui was a key figure in the Shin-hanga (new print) movement, a modernist revival of traditional woodblock printing that focused on moody, realistic landscapes. The vertical streaks of rain create such a tangible sense of weather you might want to grab a coat just looking at it!
