Rain slashes diagonally across this moody scene of a Japanese canal town, turning the water into a shimmering mirror of blue and grey. A lone figure with a bright blue umbrella huddles near the water's edge, contrasting with the muted tones of the wooden boats and traditional houses. Kawase Hasui, a master of the shin-hanga (new print) movement which revitalized traditional woodblock printing in the early 20th century, traveled extensively to capture these fleeting moments. Created in 1931, this piece perfectly encapsulates the quiet melancholy of a rainy day in Shinagawa, freezing a moment of stillness amidst the downpour.
