Suprematism 2

Suprematism 2 by Kazimir Malevich, 1915

Kazimir Malevich completely ditched realistic subjects to create this wild floating field of black rectangles and a single yellow circle. He called this radical new style 'Suprematism,' believing that pure geometric shapes could express deeper feelings than any portrait or landscape ever could. When he first unveiled these floating shapes in 1915, he hung them high up in the corner of the gallery—the exact spot traditionally reserved for religious icons in Russian homes—essentially declaring his abstract shapes the new gods of art.
