Kingyo – Pesce rosso

Kitagawa Utamaro

1793-1804

Kingyo – Pesce rosso by Kitagawa Utamaro, 1793-1804

Kitagawa Utamaro, often called the master of 'bijin-ga' (pictures of beautiful women), captures a serene moment of leisure in this ukiyo-e print. Two elegantly dressed women are fascinated by goldfish; one reaches delicately into a large green basin to touch the water, while her companion holds up a decorative flask featuring a matching fish motif. Utamaro was famous for his ability to show the personality and fashion of Edo-period women. The intricate patterns on their kimonos—from the dark, floral robes to the bright pink geometric designs—showcase his incredible attention to textile detail and the chic trends of the 1790s.
