Shinshi-bari – Esticador de tecido
1793-1804
Kitagawa Utamaro, a master of the ukiyo-e movement, captures a quiet, intimate moment between two women in this stunning woodblock print. The standing figure, wearing a large towel wrapped around her head, leans down to gaze at her companion, who looks up with a serene expression. Utamaro was famous for his bijinga, or pictures of beautiful women, often elevating everyday domestic scenes into high art. The intricate patterns on their kimonos and the bold red background show off the incredible craftsmanship of Edo-period printing. It makes you wonder what conversation is passing between them as they stretch the cloth.
