Mulher com assistentes
late 18th century - ca. 1806
Utamaro was the ultimate celebrity photographer of the Edo period, but instead of a camera, he used woodblocks to capture the glamorous lives of courtesans. Here, he lines up a procession of elegant women, their elaborate kimonos and towering hairstyles creating a rhythmic, almost fashion-show-like composition. Notice how he plays with perspective, showing the women from different angles—some in profile, others looking back—which was a revolutionary trick to make flat prints feel dynamic and alive. It's a snapshot of high-society style from over 200 years ago that still looks incredibly chic today.
