Sibbecai and Benaiah
1435
Here we have the ultimate medieval bodyguards: Sibbecai and Benaiah, two of King David's legendary 'Mighty Men' from the Bible. The figure on the left is a terrifying vision in full, faceless plate armor clutching a trophy jug, while his partner on the right looks a bit more human in a rich red tunic, holding a chalice. Konrad Witz painted this around 1435, creating a fascinating clash of styles where a traditional, flat gold background meets the hyper-realistic, clanking metal of the new Northern Renaissance.
