Landscape Hanging Scroll, 70x38
Lan Ying, a late Ming dynasty master who actually made a living as a professional painter, created this dramatic vertical landscape. Jagged, craggy peaks dominate the scene, with a tiny pavilion clinging precariously to a cliffside—talk about a view with a height! A twisted pine tree in the foreground frames the composition, leading your eye up past a cascading waterfall to the misty heights. Lan Ying was known for absorbing styles from ancient giants but adding his own bold, colorful flair, effectively bridging the gap between the rough Zhe School and the elegant Wu School traditions.
