Lofty Retreat among Cloudy Valleys on silk 172x66 by Lan Ying

Lan Ying, a master of the late Ming dynasty, created this towering landscape when he was 76 years old, proving that artistic vigor doesn't fade with age. The composition is dominated by massive, craggy peaks that seem to pierce the clouds, dwarfing the tiny human figures below. In the lower left, a scholar relaxes in a thatched pavilion, while another figure cautiously crosses a wooden bridge, perfectly capturing the traditional Chinese ideal of retreating into nature for spiritual peace. The bold, textured brushstrokes on the rocks contrast beautifully with the delicate pine trees and flowering branches.
