1923-1924
Hungarian artist László Moholy-Nagy was obsessed with how we see the world, teaching at the famous Bauhaus school before fleeing the Nazis. In this 1923 piece, he creates a dizzying 3D illusion using only stark white lines on a black square. The intersecting planes and grids look like a blueprint for a spaceship or a futuristic city. He was part of the Constructivist movement, which wanted art to look like it was built by machines, not just painted by hand. It’s a perfect example of his belief that art and technology should be best friends.
