Ask me no more by Lawrence Alma-Tadema

Lawrence Alma-Tadema was the undisputed master of painting marble so realistically you'd want to touch it, and this romantic scene is a perfect example. A young suitor in blue desperately kisses the hand of a woman in pale green, who looks away with a mix of pity and resignation, her bouquet of flowers resting forgotten beside her. The title, 'Ask Me No More,' hints at a repeated proposal being gently but firmly rejected against a stunning backdrop of the Mediterranean sea. Tadema's obsession with classical detail meant he often used real photographs of ruins to get the architecture just right, blending Victorian romance with ancient grandeur.
