Costume design for ‘Scheherazade’; Almée
1910
Léon Bakst designed this lavish costume for the 1910 Ballets Russes production of 'Scheherazade', a spectacular show that practically invented the craze for Orientalism in Western fashion. The figure, an Almée dancer, is decked out in billowing purple harem pants and a daringly exposed bodice, topped with a massive, swirling blue headdress that resembles a peacock's tail. Bakst's use of electric teals and purples was revolutionary at the time, shocking Parisian audiences and influencing everything from interior design to women's fashion for decades.
