Lin Liang

Bloemen en Vogels, Hangrol, Shanghai Museum, 247×50cm by Lin Liang

Ming Dynasty master Lin Liang was a rebel in the imperial court, trading stiff, colorful precision for bold, splashing ink that captured the wild spirit of nature. In this towering scroll, two magpies—traditional harbingers of good news—perch on a gnarled branch, their feathers rendered with a mix of wet washes and sharp, dry brushwork that makes them look ready to take flight. The extensive calligraphy at the top transforms the piece from a simple nature study into a literary event, likely a poem added by a scholar admiring Lin's revolutionary 'freehand' style.
