Abraão by Lorenzo Monaco, ca. 1408-10

The biblical patriarch Abraham sits enthroned against a shimmering gold background, his hand gently resting on the head of a kneeling youth—likely his son Isaac. Despite holding a large, menacing sword topped with red flames (hinting at the famous near-sacrifice), his expression is calm and blessing. Painted by the monk-artist Lorenzo Monaco around 1410, the work is a perfect example of International Gothic style, featuring incredibly heavy, tubular folds of pink and green fabric that look almost like melted wax. You can even see the rough wooden panel at the edges, reminding us this is a fragment of a larger, ancient altarpiece.
