Still Life with Guitar
1914
Louis Marcoussis chopped up reality into geometric shards in this 1914 Cubist masterpiece, proving that a guitar doesn't have to look like a guitar to be recognized. The instrument is fractured into brown and beige planes, sharing space with a playing card showing a club and a translucent glass. The artist playfully mixes textures—some areas look like wood grain, others like woven fabric—creating a visual puzzle where you have to look twice to see the whole picture. You can even spot his signature at the very bottom, anchoring this chaotic scene in the height of the Cubist movement.
