The Sistine Madonna

The Sistine Madonna by Louis Prang & Co., 1875

Though titled after Raphael's famous 'Sistine Madonna,' this circular image is a 19th-century chromolithograph by Louis Prang & Co., designed to bring High Renaissance beauty into American homes. Prang, a pioneer in color printing and the 'father of the American Christmas card,' used advanced lithography to replicate the soft, glowing skin tones and delicate drapery of Old Master paintings. You can even spot 'Prang's American Chromo' in the bottom corner, a badge of quality that promised households a taste of European museum culture without the travel ticket.
