Crisântemos num jarro

Lovis Corinth

1918

Crisântemos num jarro by Lovis Corinth, 1918

Lovis Corinth captured this wild bouquet of chrysanthemums in 1918 using thick, energetic brushstrokes that make the flowers look like they're bursting out of the blue-and-white pitcher. This chaotic, expressive style wasn't always his trademark; a severe stroke in 1911 completely rewired his artistic vision, pushing him away from strict realism into the raw emotion of Expressionism. The dark, moody background makes the white and deep red petals pop, showing a master painter finding new freedom and intensity in his later years. You can even see his signature and the date scratched right into the dark paint at the top.
