トリマルキオの饗宴——図版I
1919
Meet Trimalchio, the ultimate show-off of ancient Rome, captured here with a grotesque, almost manic grin by German artist Lovis Corinth in 1919. This print comes from a series illustrating the 'Satyricon,' a wild ancient Roman novel about a freedman who got rich quick and threw incredibly vulgar, over-the-top dinner parties. Corinth uses scratchy, aggressive lines and heavy cross-hatching to make this character look both powerful and ridiculous, perfectly capturing the satirical spirit of the original text. It’s a great example of how Corinth’s later work leaned into raw, expressionist energy rather than polite realism.
