Leeuwenkopgans op zijde 192.5x106, Liaoning Provinciaal Museum
Imagine a goose so dignified it looks like it's posing for a royal portrait. This is a 'Lion Head' goose, named for the fleshy knob on its head, looking up admiringly at a gnarled plum tree bursting with spring blossoms. Ming Dynasty court painter Lu Ji masterfully combined delicate, realistic feather details with bold, dark ink washes for the rocks and tree bark. The composition is full of symbolism: the plum blossom represents endurance through winter, while the goose signifies loyalty and seasonal change. It's a perfect snapshot of nature's elegance from 15th-century China, now resting in the Liaoning Provincial Museum.
