Rouleau de Shihu 29,7x300 Boston

Lu Zhi

Rouleau de Shihu 29,7x300 Boston by Lu Zhi

Unrolling this Ming Dynasty handscroll feels like stepping into a scholar's dream. On the far right, Lu Zhi paints the misty, tranquil waters of Stone Lake (Shihu) with delicate brushstrokes and sparse trees, capturing the essence of a secluded retreat near Suzhou. The majority of the scroll, however, is filled with flowing calligraphy—poems and inscriptions that turn the artwork into a literary conversation between the artist and his friends. Lu Zhi, a prominent painter of the Wu School, eventually abandoned his career to live as a hermit in the mountains, and this peaceful landscape reflects his love for nature and solitude.
