Adam And Eve
1528
Lucas Cranach the Elder, a key figure of the German Renaissance and friend of Martin Luther, painted this biblical scene more than a dozen times! Here, Adam and Eve stand awkwardly by the Tree of Knowledge, sharing the fateful apple while a serpent watches from above. Notice how Eve’s long, flowing red hair and pale skin look almost identical to other women Cranach painted—he had a very specific 'type' that he reused constantly. A curious stag peers out from the bushes on the left, adding a touch of woodland charm to this moment of original sin.
