Judgment of Paris
1530
Imagine the ultimate high-stakes beauty pageant, but with world-ending consequences! Here, the Trojan prince Paris—dressed not as a shepherd but as a contemporary knight in gleaming red armor—must decide which of three goddesses is the fairest. Above them, a mischievous Cupid takes aim from a tree branch, while an odd, bearded figure in a peacock-feather cloak looks on. Cranach painted this mythological scene dozens of times, often using the same models for the goddesses, turning ancient drama into a fashionable Renaissance spectacle that ultimately sparked the Trojan War.
