The Baptism of Christ
1530s
Lucas Cranach the Elder brings a distinctly German Renaissance flair to this classic biblical scene, setting the baptism in a lush, almost fairytale-like landscape. While John the Baptist and Jesus stand knee-deep in the river, God the Father floats in the clouds above, proclaiming his approval in Latin, while a dove descends in the distance. To the left, a serene forest is packed with deer, contrasting sharply with the elaborate, fortified city perched on the hill to the right. Cranach, a close friend of Martin Luther, often blended traditional religious themes with the detailed, vibrant landscapes characteristic of Northern European art.
