Die Kreuzigung
1506 - 1520
Lucas Cranach the Elder brings a dramatic, almost cinematic energy to this classic biblical scene. Notice the swirling, stormy sky behind the three crosses—it feels like nature itself is reacting to the moment. Below, the crowd is a chaotic mix of grieving women in vibrant robes and armored soldiers on horseback, all rendered with Cranach's signature sharp detail. Look closely at the bottom center: there's a skeleton lying on the ground. That's Adam! According to tradition, Golgotha (the site of the crucifixion) was built over Adam's burial place, symbolizing Christ's sacrifice redeeming original sin. Cranach, a close friend of Martin Luther, painted several versions of this, blending intense emotion with the crisp style of the Northern Renaissance.
