Ecce Homo
1521
Lucas van Leyden was a Dutch prodigy who created this incredibly detailed engraving when he was just 27 years old, signing and dating it right there on the stone step in the foreground (1521). The scene captures the dramatic biblical moment of 'Ecce Homo' (Behold the Man), where a weary, crown-of-thorns-wearing Christ is presented to the crowd. Notice the soldier in the foreground with his shiny armor and the man in the turban looming behind Jesus—van Leyden's mastery of fine line work makes the textures of fabric and metal practically pop off the page. It's a masterclass in Northern Renaissance storytelling, packed with emotion and intricate detail.
