Lucrezia
Lucas van Leyden captures the tragic final moments of Lucretia, a Roman noblewoman whose story literally sparked a revolution. She stands with a powerful, muscular stance, her wild, flowing hair framing her body as she grips a sword, its tip resting on a block as she prepares to fall upon it. This act of defiance after a terrible assault led to the overthrow of the Roman monarchy and the birth of the Republic. Created around 1515, this engraving showcases the Northern Renaissance master's incredible ability to render texture and emotion through fine, precise lines.
