Heilige Petrus und Paulus mit dem Schweißtuch der Veronika
1517
Look at this dynamic duo of saints! On the left stands Saint Peter, clutching his famous keys to heaven, while Saint Paul on the right grips a sword and a book, looking rather intense. Together, they are proudly displaying the 'Vernicle'—a cloth bearing the miraculous face of Christ wearing a crown of thorns. Lucas van Leyden created this masterpiece in 1517 when he was just a young prodigy in his early twenties, showing off incredible skill with fine lines and shading that makes the fabric look like it's actually draping. It's a classic example of Northern Renaissance art, where every beard hair and fold of cloth gets the spotlight.
