籠の中のウェルギリウス
1525
Lucas van Leyden captures the ultimate medieval 'walk of shame' in this 1525 engraving, illustrating the legend of the Roman poet Virgil. Tricked by a princess into climbing a basket to her window for a midnight rendezvous, Virgil was left dangling there overnight for the entire city to mock. In the foreground, children point upwards at the humiliated poet while a crowd of onlookers gathers in the courtyard, turning a failed romantic gesture into a hilarious public spectacle.
