Subscribe Here to the War Loan by Lucian Bernhard, 1914-1918

During the height of World War I, graphic designer Lucian Bernhard was tasked with convincing the German public to open their wallets for the war effort. This poster, translating to 'Here one subscribes to the war loan,' uses massive, gothic blackletter typography to shout its message rather than relying on imagery. Bernhard was actually the father of the *Plakatstil* (Poster Style) movement within modernism, which usually favored simple pictures of products, but here he proves that bold text alone can be incredibly persuasive. The orange deadline at the bottom—Thursday, October 18th at 1 PM—adds a frantic, ticking-clock urgency to the design, showing how modernist design was quickly put to work for national propaganda.
