Adam and Eve

Adam and Eve by Maarten Van Heemskerck

Maarten van Heemskerck gives Adam the physique of a Renaissance bodybuilder in this dramatic take on the Garden of Eden. Eve, looking remarkably calm, accepts the forbidden fruit from a snake that seems to be offering it like a polite waiter rather than a terrifying temptress. Heemskerck actually traveled to Italy to study Michelangelo, and you can clearly see that influence in the sculpted muscles and idealized forms, blending Dutch detail with Italian grandeur. Those flimsy little branches are working overtime to cover their nudity right before the inevitable expulsion from paradise.
