Moors on Horseback
1838-74
Mariano Fortuny Marsal was absolutely obsessed with the light and chaotic energy of North Africa, and this sketch proves it. You can almost hear the hooves pounding as a group of Moorish riders charges across the landscape, their forms rendered in loose, frantic splashes of blue, brown, and white watercolor. It feels less like a formal portrait and more like a fleeting, adrenaline-fueled memory of a battle. The red circular stamp in the corner is a studio mark, authenticating this energetic study from the Spanish master who tragically died at just 36.
