Sudden Shower, Newbury Marshes by Martin Johnson Heade, ca. 1865-75

Martin Johnson Heade was absolutely obsessed with the marshes around Newburyport, Massachusetts, painting them over and over to capture their shifting light and moods. In this dramatic scene, you can see a classic New England summer surprise: a heavy rain shower pouring down in the distance while the foreground remains bathed in sunlight. The massive haystacks and grazing cows sit calmly under a sky that's half stormy gray and half bright blue, showing off Heade's incredible talent for atmospheric effects. He was part of the American Romantic movement, which loved to show nature's power and beauty, and these marsh scenes became his signature masterpiece.
