Christ Bearing the Cross
c. 1480
Martin Schongauer, a giant of the Northern Renaissance, packs intense drama into this crowded scene of Christ's journey to Calvary. The chaotic energy is palpable as soldiers with halberds and spears shove the weary figure forward, while a kneeling woman offers a veil imprinted with his face. You can spot his signature 'M t S' at the bottom—Schongauer was so legendary that a young Albrecht Dürer traveled just to meet him, only to arrive too late. The incredibly fine lines show why he was considered the master of engraving before Dürer took the crown.
