Reiher auf einem Weidenzweig by Maruyama Ōkyo, late 1700s

Maruyama Ōkyo was a rebel in 18th-century Japan who decided art should look like real life, even while the ukiyo-e 'floating world' style was all the rage. He famously sketched from nature (*shasei*), and you can see that obsession here in the incredibly lifelike feathers and claws of this heron. The bird is perched on a gnarled willow branch against a dazzling gold leaf background, creating a striking contrast between the rugged nature and the luxurious setting. The huge amount of empty space on the left isn't a mistake—it's a classic Japanese aesthetic choice that lets the viewer's imagination fill in the rest of the landscape.
