Nurse and Child
1896-97
Mary Cassatt, an American artist who found her home in the French Impressionist movement, had a special talent for capturing the quiet, unguarded moments of motherhood and childcare. Here, a nurse cradles a toddler in her lap, her expression soft and attentive, while the child gazes out with a look of innocent curiosity. The soft, chalky textures and warm pinks and whites create a sense of comfort and intimacy, typical of Cassatt's work which often celebrated the private lives of women. She was one of the few women accepted into the Impressionist circle in Paris, and she used that platform to show the beauty in everyday domestic scenes.
