The Caress
Mary Cassatt’s 'The Caress' captures a tender, intimate moment between a mother and her two children. The mother, dressed in a striking green gown, holds a naked toddler while an older child leans in to kiss the baby's cheek. Cassatt, an American artist who spent most of her career in France, was a key figure in the Impressionist movement and was famously invited by Edgar Degas to exhibit with the group. She specialized in depicting the social and private lives of women, particularly the intimate bonds between mothers and children. The loose, expressive brushstrokes and the focus on everyday domestic life are hallmarks of her Impressionist style, bringing a sense of warmth and immediacy to the scene.
