Saint Veronica with the Veil
circa 1652- 1653
Saint Veronica gazes heavenward with an expression of awe, her face emerging from the darkness as she clutches a cloth bearing the faint, reddish imprint of Christ's face. According to legend, she wiped the sweat and blood from Jesus' brow on his way to the crucifixion, and his image was miraculously left behind on the veil—so much so that her name is often thought to derive from 'vera icon' (true image). The intense contrast between light and shadow is a signature of the Baroque movement, making the spiritual moment feel incredibly immediate and emotional.
