Young girls that one would call angels
1892
Maurice Denis, a founding member of the avant-garde Nabis group, captures a dreamlike trio of women in this 1892 masterpiece. Notice how the faces in the background are split into striking green and orange halves, creating an otherworldly, almost mask-like effect that perfectly embodies the Symbolist movement's love for mystery over realism. The foreground figure, with her serene gaze and vibrant checkered collar, seems to float in a sea of warm, flattened colors. Denis famously believed a picture was essentially a flat surface covered with colors arranged in a certain order, and this piece is a beautiful, poetic proof of that radical idea.
