Bastille Day
1892
Maurice Prendergast captured the electric atmosphere of a Parisian street party on the night of July 14, 1892, as written at the bottom. You can almost hear the bustle of the crowd gathered under trees strung with glowing pink lanterns for Bastille Day. The figures are simplified into dark, ghostly shapes, contrasting beautifully with the festive lights and showing off the artist's early Post-Impressionist style. It feels like a magical summer night frozen in time, created while the young American was studying in France.
