Christ Preaching at Capernaum by Maurycy Gottlieb, 1878 - 1879

Tragically dying at just 23, Polish-Jewish artist Maurycy Gottlieb created this powerful 1879 scene of Jesus teaching in a synagogue. He deliberately portrays Christ as a fellow Jew, wearing a striped prayer shawl and standing before a congregation that resembles 19th-century Eastern European Jews rather than ancient figures. The crowd's reactions are wonderfully human—some are mesmerized by his raised arms, while others look bored or skeptical, capturing the tension of the moment. It stands as a bold Romantic plea for reconciliation between faiths.
