Apocalyps 4

Max Beckmann

1943

Apocalyps 4 by Max Beckmann, 1943

Created in 1943 while Max Beckmann was in exile in Amsterdam hiding from the Nazis, this chaotic scene captures the sheer terror of World War II. A crowned rider on a grey horse brandishes swords like a manic conductor, trampling over a tangle of distorted bodies and strange, bird-headed figures below. This piece, part of his 'Apocalypse' series, uses scratchy, frantic lines and clashing colors to turn the biblical end of the world into a very modern, personal horror story.
