Amargura 2
1920
Max Beckmann’s jagged lines capture the mood of post-WWI Germany perfectly in this 1920 expressionist piece. You see a man with a sharp, almost caricature-like profile and a strange hat, staring out with a look of pure disillusionment. A cat lounges in front of him, seemingly indifferent to the grim figure in the background holding an umbrella. Beckmann served as a medic during the war and suffered a nervous breakdown, which totally transformed his art from cheerful scenes to these dark, angular visions of a broken world.
