Max Beckmann’s 'Bitterness' is a masterclass in moody atmosphere, capturing a moment of stark isolation. We see a man with a heavy, blocky head and a flat cap staring out a window, his profile sharp and angular, looking deeply unhappy. He seems to be watching a tiny, lonely figure walking in the rain with an umbrella outside, emphasizing the gloom. Ironically, a cat is sprawled out comfortably on the table right in front of him, completely unbothered by the man's sour mood. This piece is a classic example of Expressionism, using jagged lines and distorted shapes to project inner feelings of bitterness rather than just recording reality.
