1914-1918
Created during the brutal years of World War I, this lithograph by Max Beckmann is a perfect example of German Expressionism's raw, emotional power. Instead of a peaceful family portrait, we get a crowded, anxious scene where an elderly woman stares out while a baby reaches toward a younger figure, all surrounded by jagged lines and floating moons. Beckmann was serving as a medical orderly during this time, and the trauma of war seeped into his art, turning everyday faces into haunting, psychological puzzles.
